Range of music videos
We were told to go on the Internet and look up music videos to get an idea of what music videos could include in them and all round inspiration for our music video.
I am going to look at six music videos talk about them.

Beastie Boy – Sabotage the music video is directed by Spike Jones, this has to be one of the best music videos made “in my opinion” its not very experimental but for a music video it is above and beyond what to except, as it is basically an opening sequence to a fictional crime drama from the 1970s. It is violent, fast paced and shot mainly with hand held to give it a realistic feel I also like the use of freeze frames to introduce the characters and the colours used.

Apex Twin – Window Licker, Chris Cunningham directs the music video. The music video is excellent in showing that a music video can be anything. This video uses key conventions from hip-hop and dance scenes you would see in a Michael Jackson music video but used in an electronic/rave song. The video itself is bizarre, very sexual, and thought provoking. I like how everyone’s face becomes his face; similar to the other Apex Twins music videos you could say it’s his trademark. As the song progresses in to the crescendo so does the video ramping up the editing and introducing a new character with a demonic face still using the hip-hop key conventions in an un-conventional way.

Direct inspirations
Justin Bieber what do you mean, as you can see this music video is heavily rotoscoped after researching rotoscoping this is one of the places where I got inspiration from.
Jodie and me experimented with rotoscoping for our personal projects you can see this here. |

Christian Maté Grab, is a Youtuber that I follow I like his use of slow motion in his videos and I would like to incorporate it in to the music video. I think I would help convey emotions to the audience.
Side note it also look amazing very pleasing to the eye. |

Research your chosen musical genre in detail using a wide range of examples.
For our music we are using Aarons song the genre for the song is acoustic, Acoustic music is music that is solely or primarily uses instruments that produce sound through acoustic means, as opposed to electronic means. The history behind acoustic music comes from folk music from the 1960s following the increasing popularity of the television show MTV unplugged during the 1990s, acoustic performances by musicians who usually rely on electronic instruments became colloquially refereed to as “unplugged” performances.
In modern times the genre is very popular and has seen some of the best band and singer song writer help create it like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tenacious D and Robbie Williams.

The most important to our production Ed Sheeran as Aarons music is very similar to his style.

Acoustic music is very varied, as there are many different approaches you can take towards it, the conventions of the music, keep the song fairly slow-paced and always have a significant meaning behind them with the music telling a particular story, allowing you to connect and feel the emotions of the song.
The Key conventions of an acoustic artist, like many music genres there tends to be a particular image that the band or an artist takes on to encorporate their music. The acoustic genre and its artists have a particular look:

Music video director
I am going to research and reflect on the music director Michel Gondry. Let me start by saying it was a hard choose between Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze has create some amazing unique music videos and worked with some amazing talented bands and singer over his career but I personal chosen Michel Gondry as his videos resonate with me and I its simple I just like them better.
Michel Gondry was born in Versailles, France 1963. His career as a filmmaker began with creating music video for the French rock band Oui Oui. The style of his videos caught the attention of the music artist Bjork. After this he started collaborating with other artists such as.
Just to name a few I recognised. He has worked with these artists on many occasions over the years to create their music videos.

All of his videos are unique and different; Gondry in my opinion is an artist thanks to his experimentation in his music videos. He has created some iconic music videos for example Daft Punk - around the world, his vision for the video is every “set of characters” repents a different instrument in the song. The White Stripes – Fell in love with a girl, the music video is a Lego animation it was shot frame by frame with each frame having the Lego bricks rebuilt sometimes in a complex manner to seem as if it were an actual shot, and then formed together to give the illusion of motion also working with The White Stripes – hardest Button To Button, this music utilizes pixilation animation to create the effect of dozens of drum kits. On every new beat, a new drum materializes.
If you just look at the three different examples I have picked to can see he’s diversity and he’s artist eye like I said he has a very unique style.

Reflection
Michel Gondry is a very talented director and has created some of the most iconic music videos that I have seen every one is unique and different to the last he is a true artist. I am amazed with how many talented bands he has worked with over his career.
I really like how he tries something different and experiments; the White Stripe music videos are an excellent experimentation idea that works well you could say the music video is more iconic then the song. The cherry on the top of the cake id the Daft Punk music video I like how each character is resenting a different instrument in the song.

Over the weekend I learnt how to create the scribble effects by watching a tutorial on Youtube, I think this would be good in our music video and have seen it used in a lot of new music videos. So what is scribble? Basically it is rotoscoping. Rotoscoping It is an animation technique used by animators to trace over motion picture footage, frame by frame. I used Adobe After Effects for this process it is very easy to learn but is very time consuming as you are animating each frame. I really like this effects and I think it would look good in our music video, I was thinking of using it with a guitar as you can see from my test footage and experimenting. |

Using Look Up Tables, LUTs
I have recently purchased a new camera a Sony a6300, the camera has the ability to record in Sony Slog picture profile. This has a flat wash out image so you can have a higher range of dynamic range 14 in total this can give you more detail out of the colours in colour grading. |

Preproduction Location scouting Keswick, Today me Olly and Jodie went to Keswick to scout for locations to shoot our music video. Jodie had an idea of where to shoot, surprise view. We drove there parked up and went off looking for good shots. The location is really good and is what we are looking for it will look very cinematic and suit the genre of the music. Next we had to get a actress, create storybored and plan for the shoot. |

Time for dinner we headed to a location café and had dinner reviewed the footage on my Macbook.
After dinner as set off to the last location surprise view we arrived there set up and cracked on with the filming. It started to rain so we had to wipe the camera to make sure the lens and camera wasn’t wet. We had some luck as a local cabin was open with a log fire in it, we decided to use this location as we though it would fit the music videos style. |
We thanked the man who was running it “it’s on the Vlog” we head off up to the top of the mountain to capture the last scene of the production.
That was the end of filming I packed all of my equipment away and we headed off home.
I landed home about 4pm and started reviewing the footage and choosing a colour grade to use. I then stared editing the music video.
I landed home about 4pm and started reviewing the footage and choosing a colour grade to use. I then stared editing the music video.
I used an adjustment layer to control the grade, and apply the cinematic black bars using crop effect giving it a more professional look.
What is an adjustment layer?
In Adobe Premiere Pro, you can use an adjustment layer to apply the same effect to multiple clips on the Timeline. Effects applied to an adjustment layer affect all layers below it in the layer stacking order.
This means I can control all of my clips with one single layer, which makes it easier on my computer to handle the intense CPU load. I chose a Slog LUT and corrected it to taste, using lumetri scopes to make sure I am not clipping or crunching the colours trying to get a consistent exposure.
I had to correct the exposure on each piece of footage to get a flat exposure throughout the clips.

Think the colours good great a suit the vibe we are going for the music video. This process was quit simple but the more I study colour grading I am starting to understand how complicated it is and its not as easy as it seams.
For my FMP I am going to experiment with colour grading.

Postproduction So the next day I started to build a basic edit, I recorded in 4K so i had to scale it down to 1920 - 1080p. I just had to bring the scale down to 50%. the edit was coming along but then I came the conclusion that we had too much good footage and we will have to decide what we would like to keep in and take out. This is a shame as the start of the video is very good, we all like it and didn’t want to cut it out but I decided to create another edit with a different start to it. But will it work ? |
First attempt, Music video
|
So I started on the new edit i always like to create separate tracks for the scenes and organise, label my edits, the idea behind this edit is that Arron is telling a story when he is playing his guitar and I try to tell the story to the audience using the slow motion scenes, I edited it backwards as i knew what we wanted as the end scene this might we different than other people do but it works for me. I personal believe when making a music video that the video the should be in time to the instruments or the vocals i think this makes the scenes and transitions flow better with each other. The edit was simple to create and structure the only problem was we had so much good footage we wanted to use, it was hard decided what to use and trying to find space for everything we wanted.
Slow motion and why we used so much of it ? I wanted to use slow motion, as I believe the helps convey emotion to the audience also it suits the vibe, tone and mood of the genre. |
The end scenes, for the end scenes I wanted to use experiment with a speed ramp I never have used one before. I searched on Youtube on how to do it, it was very easy to learn.
I used key frames on the clip, I slowed it down the speeded it up to create a whip like effect.
I think it worked well with in the scene and really adds to the production value and a good end to the music video
